West Bengal to establish 660 MW thermal power plant in Durgapur

Petroleum  -  Sep 04,2025  -

The West Bengal government has announced plans to set up a new 660 MW supercritical thermal power plant in Durgapur.

The project will be developed on unused land belonging to the Durgapur Projects Limited (DPL), a state-owned public sector undertaking.

The plant will be built under a public-private partnership (PPP) model on a revenue-sharing basis, with a global tender expected to be floated after the Durga Puja festival.

The state government will provide the land and essential infrastructure, such as ash ponds and coal handling facilities, while ensuring coal linkages from Coal India Limited.

The selected private developer will be responsible for the investment and construction of the plant.

The entire power generated will be purchased by the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) under a long-term power purchase agreement.

This initiative aims to address the state's growing energy needs and bridge the demand-supply gap.
