India invites South Korean ship owners to flag vessels, invest in ports

Infrastructure  -  Apr 22,2026  -

India has invited South Korean ship owners to register vessels under the Indian flag and invest in port infrastructure, signalling a strategic push to strengthen its maritime sector and reduce dependence on foreign shipping lines.

The initiative is aimed at boosting domestic shipping capacity while attracting global expertise and capital into port development, aligning with India’s broader vision of becoming a global maritime hub.

By encouraging foreign participation alongside policy support, the move is expected to enhance cargo handling efficiency, improve logistics competitiveness, and support the country’s ambitions under port-led development programmes such as Sagarmala.

It also reflects India’s intent to increase the share of Indian-flagged vessels in global trade, which remains relatively low compared to major maritime economies.

Over time, such collaborations could help develop ancillary industries such as ship repair, maritime services, and coastal logistics ecosystems.
