Inspired by Kochi, Chennai explores water metro project

Industrial Products  -  Sep 04,2025  -

Inspired by the success of Kochi's water metro, the Chennai government has initiated a feasibility study for a new "Water Metro" project.

The proposed route would connect Napier Bridge to Kovalam, covering a distance of 53 km along the Buckingham Canal.

This project, which aims to improve both urban mobility and tourism, is a major step toward developing Chennai's inland waterways.

The Water Resources Department (WRD) will prepare a detailed project report (DPR) that will also involve restoring and desilting the Buckingham Canal, a crucial first step.

The entire project, including canal restoration, could cost an estimated ₹3,000-5,000 crore. The use of electric or hybrid ferries is being considered to ensure the system is both environmentally friendly and sustainable.
