After decades of delays, the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has issued an international tender for the construction of the 1,856 MW Sawalkote Hydroelectric Project on the Chenab river in Jammu & Kashmir. 

The project, a strategic national asset, has been revived following the abeyance of the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan.

The tender, which has a submission deadline of September 10, invites bids for the planning, design, and engineering works. 

With an estimated cost of over Rs 22,704 crore, the run-of-river project is the largest hydropower initiative in J&K and is expected to generate approximately 8,000 million units of electricity annually, significantly boosting the region's energy security.
