Tata Chemicals Magadi commissions world's first electric soda ash calciner

Chemicals  -  Jul 30,2025  -

Tata Chemicals Magadi Ltd (TCML) has made a groundbreaking move in the global soda ash industry by starting operations of the world's first fully electric soda ash calciner.

This innovative machine, capable of processing 10 tons per hour, is a major step towards making soda ash production more environmentally friendly.

Located in Kenya, TCML is the largest producer of natural soda ash in Africa. This new electric calciner, along with a new 5-megawatt (MW) solar power plant, replaces the traditional method that relied on heavy furnace oil.

This change significantly reduces the company's carbon footprint and helps them move closer to their goal of achieving "net-zero" carbon emissions by 2045, as part of Tata Group's "Project Alingana."

This development not only improves efficiency and production capacity but also strengthens Kenya's role as a supplier of eco-friendly soda ash, which is used in industries worldwide like glass, detergents, and chemicals.
