Tamil Nadu govt approves Rs 80 billion plan to upgrade 20,000 km rural Roads

Infrastructure  -  Jul 10,2025  -

The Tamil Nadu government has greenlit an ambitious Rs 8,000 crore plan to upgrade and strengthen 20,000 kilometers of rural roads across the state.

This massive initiative, launched under the "Mudhalvarin Grama Saalaigal Membattu Thittam" (Chief Minister's Rural Roads Development Scheme), aims to revolutionize rural mobility and infrastructure.

The comprehensive plan, initially launched in 2022-23, has already seen substantial progress.

To date, 12,572 km of roads, covering 9,690 projects, have been completed at a cost of Rs 4,609 crore. Furthermore, work on an additional 6,671 km is currently underway, supported by an allocation of Rs 3,529 crore.

This strategic investment underscores the government's commitment to enhancing last-mile connectivity and improving the quality of life in rural areas.

Well-maintained rural roads are crucial for facilitating the movement of agricultural produce, improving access to markets, healthcare, and educational facilities, and stimulating economic activities in remote villages.
