Praj Industries, thyssenkrupp Uhde forge alliance for polylactic acid production

Industrial Products  -  Apr 30,2025  -

Praj Industries and Uhde Inventa-Fischer (UIF), the subsidiary of thyssenkrupp Uhde, have forged an alliance to deliver a complete, end-to-end technology platform for polylactic acid (PLA) production.

This collaboration combines their respective strengths in biotechnology and polymer engineering to create a seamless and scalable PLA solution aimed at revolutionising the bioplastics sector and promoting a circular bioeconomy.

PLA, a biodegradable and renewable plastic, is emerging as a key alternative in the global effort to reduce plastic pollution.

This partnership addresses the need with a fully integrated PLA production process, from feedstock conversion to polymerisation, delivering efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and environmental benefits.

Praj has reinforced its position by establishing a Centre of Excellence and Innovation for Biopolymers in partnership with ICT Mumbai, dedicated to the development and application of biopolymers. It has also commissioned India’s first Demonstration Facility for Biopolymers near Pune, which produces lactic acid and lactide.

The integrated technology platform enables the production of different grades of lactic acid suitable for both food and industrial use, and supports a broad spectrum of PLA grades tailored for industries such as packaging, textiles, and hygiene.
