Oil India plans MSW-based biogas plant in Jorhat, Assam

Petroleum  -  Nov 06,2025  -

Oil India Limited (OIL) has issued a tender to establish a municipal-solid-waste-based compressed biogas (CBG) plant in Jorhat, Assam. The project will convert organic waste into clean fuel, supporting India’s GOBARdhan and SATAT schemes that promote circular-economy waste-to-energy models.

The Jorhat plant is designed to process several hundred tonnes of waste daily, producing CBG for automotive and industrial applications. It will also generate organic manure as a by-product, contributing to rural income and sustainable agriculture.

For OIL, the move reflects diversification beyond conventional fossil-fuel operations toward low-carbon energy alternatives. The company has been steadily investing in green hydrogen, CBG, and solar projects across the Northeast.

The project complements Assam’s focus on improving waste management and promoting bio-energy entrepreneurship. Once completed, it will help the state meet its renewable-energy targets while creating local employment and cleaner urban environments.
