NTPC Group developing 20 GW pumped storage projects

Power Generation  -  Jun 17,2025  -

The NTPC Group is actively working on building pumped storage projects (PSPs) across India, with a huge total capacity planned to reach 20 gigawatts (GW).

A senior company official confirmed this ambitious plan, highlighting the state-owned power generator's dedication to improving grid stability and better incorporating renewable energy.

The company has set a goal to get between 3 to 5 GW of these pumped storage projects up and running by the financial year 2031-32. This significant push into pumped hydro energy storage shows NTPC's strategic vision for a stronger and more sustainable energy future.

"The NTPC Group is working on a pipeline of pumped storage projects to the tune of 20 GW in NTPC and its hydro subsidiaries," the official stated, emphasizing the sheer size of this undertaking.

Pumped storage projects are vital for balancing the power grid, especially as India adds more renewable energy sources like solar and wind power, which don't produce a constant supply. They work by storing extra electricity by pumping water uphill to a reservoir. Then, when there's high demand for power, they release the water to generate electricity, acting like large, natural batteries.
