Maharashtra government approves Nagpur-Goa Expressway worth Rs 20,787 crore

Infrastructure  -  Jun 25,2025  -

The government of Maharashtra has given its approval for spending Rs 20,787 crore to buy land for a new expressway. This road will be 802 kilometers long and connect Pavnar (in Wardha district) to Patradevi (in Sindhudurg district), which is on the border of Maharashtra and Goa. It will be called the Maharashtra Shaktipeeth expressway.

The expressway will pass through 12 different districts: Wardha, Yavatmal, Hingoli, Nanded, Parbhani, Beed, Latur, Dharashiv, Solapur, Sangli, Kolhapur, and Sindhudurg. It will also connect to the existing Konkan expressway.

The main goal of this project is to make it easier for people to visit important religious places. It will connect significant spiritual sites like the Shaktipeeths (Mahur, Tuljapur, and Kolhapur), as well as Ambajogai, the Shri Vitthal Rukmini Temple in Pandharpur, and the Jyotirlingas (important Shiva temples) at Aundha Nagnath and Parli Vaijnath. Once the expressway is built, the travel time from Nagpur to Goa will be cut significantly, from 18 hours to just 8 hours.

This expressway is seen as a way to connect different cultures and religions. It will improve travel across the Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Western Maharashtra regions, linking key pilgrimage spots such as the Mahalaxmi Temple in Kolhapur, the Tulja Bhavani Temple in Dharashiv, and the Renuka Mata Shakti Peeth in Nanded.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is in charge of building this project. They will get 12,000 crore as a loan from the Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) to buy almost 7500 hectares of land.
