Maharashtra Cabinet approves Rs 862 crore to establish 80 MW power generation unit

Power Generation  -  Jun 26,2025  -

The Maharashtra government, led by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has given the green light to the Koyna Dam Base Power House Project, also known as the Piatha Power House. They've set aside a good chunk of money for it: about Rs 862 crore and 29 lakh.

This project is part of the state's bigger plan to improve its renewable energy sources. The new power plant will be built right at the bottom of the Koyna Dam and is expected to create 80 megawatts (MW) of electricity. It will be located on the dam's left side, using the natural water power of the area.

The Koyna Dam is already a big source of electricity from water for Maharashtra, and this new plant will make it even stronger.

To make this project happen, an agreement has been signed with the Maharashtra Krishna Valley Development Corporation (MKVDC) and the Mahanirmithi Company (Maharashtra State Power Generation Co. Ltd.).

Besides making electricity, this project is also designed to help with irrigation schemes for local farms.
