KEM hospital to add 500 new beds as part of expansion

Hospitality and Healthcare  -  Jul 14,2025  -

King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital in Parel, a cornerstone of public healthcare, is embarking on an ambitious expansion project set to revolutionize its capacity and services by June 2026.

This extensive redevelopment, spearheaded by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), aims to significantly alleviate the immense pressure on the city's overburdened public health system by adding 500 new beds, a state-of-the-art diagnostic center, and, notably, a rooftop helipad for enhanced emergency response.

Once completed, KEM Hospital's bed capacity will surge to 2,750, establishing it not only as Mumbai's largest civic-run facility but also as one of its most advanced.

The need for this expansion is critical, as KEM currently handles a staggering 6,000 outpatients and 180 admissions daily, performing over 70,000 surgeries annually. Patients from across Maharashtra flock to KEM, often enduring long waits for critical care, specialized treatments, and surgeries.

The new facilities are designed to manage this increasing patient footfall and elevate the overall quality of care across all departments, particularly in stretched ICU, emergency, and trauma services.
