Kakinada SEZ to invest Rs 1,310 crore to build a desalination plant in Andhra Pradesh

Environment  -  Jul 14,2025  -

Kakinada SEZ Limited is set to make a significant investment of Rs 1,310 crore in establishing a large-scale desalination plant in Kona Village, Kakinada District.

This vital infrastructure project aims to address the growing water demands of industries and the port within the Kakinada Special Economic Zone (SEZ), reducing reliance on freshwater sources and supporting the region's industrial growth.

The proposed desalination plant will have a substantial capacity of 3x50 Million Liters per Day (MLD), totaling 150 MLD.

The plant will draw 380 MLD of seawater through two intake pipelines, producing 150 MLD of treated water for distribution to industries and the port.

A major benefit of the project is the significant reduction in the load on existing freshwater resources and a substantial decrease in groundwater tapping in the surrounding areas.

The project recently received a crucial recommendation for Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance from an Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, subject to specific environmental conditions.
