India’s first CBG Plant with Steel Pipeline Integration inaugurated in Punjab

Environment  -  Jul 11,2025  -

India has achieved a significant milestone in its clean energy transition with the commissioning of the nation's first Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant to be directly integrated into a City Gas Distribution (CGD) network via a steel pipeline.

Located in Batala, Gurdaspur, Punjab, this pioneering project sets a new national standard for the safe, efficient, and continuous delivery of green energy.

The MEPL Bio-energy plant, with CEID Consultants and Engineering Pvt Ltd as its EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) partner, has achieved this breakthrough by successfully connecting to Gujarat Gas Ltd.'s CGD network.

This innovative integration marks a crucial departure from traditional CBG transportation methods, which heavily relied on cumbersome and costly cylinder cascades.

The key benefit of this steel pipeline integration is the elimination of cascade transportation. Previously, CBG plants faced challenges with high logistics costs, safety concerns associated with cylinder movement, and limitations in scalability due to the need for frequent cylinder exchanges.

With the direct pipeline connection, CBG can now be supplied in a real-time, continuous, and significantly safer manner directly into the CGD grid.
