Delhi to transform Najafgarh drain into 30 MW solar power project

Power Generation  -  Jun 19,2025  -

The Delhi government has announced plans to turn the Najafgarh Drain into a 30 MW solar power project that sits on top of the canal. This is to promote clean energy and save water.

The first part of the project will cover six kilometers from Dhansa Border to Ghummanhera. This section is expected to produce five MW of electricity and save 270 million liters of water each year by reducing how much water evaporates. This plan is part of Delhi's bigger goal to make its solar energy capacity three times larger by 2027.

The project will be built with both government and private companies working together. Similar solar installations on top of canals are also being considered for other large drains like the Barapullah and Agra canals. The Najafgarh Drain, which is a big source of pollution for the Yamuna River, is also being cleaned of dirt and brought back to life as part of efforts to clean the river. Delhi's Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, LG VK Saxena, and PWD Minister Parvesh Verma are directly watching over this project.

In addition, 32 real-time water monitoring stations will be put in place, with 10 of them on the Yamuna River. The Delhi Cabinet has approved money to help people install solar panels, offering Rs 1,08,000 for three KW panels and Rs 10,000 for one KW systems. The Delhi Assembly building will also become the country's first state assembly to run on solar power with a 500 KW plant.
