L&T secures land in Gujarat for green hydrogen, ammonia projects

Power Generation  -  Jun 19,2025  -

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has announced that it has bought land in Kandla, Gujarat, to build projects for making green hydrogen and green ammonia.

The government is actively pushing for green hydrogen as a clean energy source, with programs like the National Green Hydrogen Mission and trial projects to use it in transport.

Speaking to the company's owners, Chairman & Managing Director S N Subrahmanyan said that L&T has made big progress in new, clean energy areas, especially green hydrogen and small modular reactors (SMRs).

He mentioned that they are already making equipment to produce green hydrogen, which gives the company an early advantage.

He also said, "A big step was getting approval from the US Department of Energy to bring SMR technology to India. Since L&T is one of only three Indian companies allowed to do this, it officially starts our journey into SMRs, letting us lead the way in bringing nuclear energy to India."

He added, "Even though we started with international partners for both green hydrogen and SMRs, our long-term plan is to create our own technology, make the main equipment, and offer affordable, new solutions made for growing markets."
