Centre set to approve 110-km-long Bhubaneswar bypass project

Infrastructure  -  Jul 14,2025  -

The Central Government is set to approve the ambitious 110-km-long Bhubaneswar bypass project, estimated to cost Rs 8,300 crore.

This six-lane Greenfield Capital Region Ring Road, also known as the Bhubaneswar Bypass, promises to significantly ease traffic congestion, reduce travel times, and spur economic growth across the region.

The proposal for this vital infrastructure project has already received clearance from an inter-ministerial panel and is anticipated to get the final nod from the Union Cabinet in the coming weeks.

The project's primary objective is to alleviate the severe congestion on the existing 86-km section of NH-16, which currently passes through the highly urbanized areas of Khurda, Bhubaneswar, and Cuttack.

With Bhubaneswar experiencing rapid urbanization and traffic exceeding one lakh passenger car units (PCUs), a bypass has become an urgent necessity.
