The highly anticipated Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project, popularly known as the bullet train, is now projected for completion by December 2029.

This timeline was shared by the Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, July 23, 2025.

While the entire 508-km corridor connecting Maharashtra and Sabarmati (Gujarat) is expected to be operational by late 2029, the Gujarat portion of the project, specifically between Vapi and Sabarmati, is slated for completion by December 2027. This phased approach aims to bring parts of the high-speed corridor online sooner.

The ambitious project, which had its foundation stone laid in September 2017, is being executed with significant technical and financial assistance from the Japanese government. Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is funding 81% of the estimated total cost of Rs 1.1 lakh crore, with the remaining 19% being covered by equity contributions from Indian Railways (50%) and the state governments of Maharashtra and Gujarat (50%).

Minister Vaishnaw acknowledged that the project's complex and technology-intensive nature means that exact completion timelines can only be fully ascertained after all associated civil structures, track, electrical, signaling, telecommunication works, and trainset supplies are complete.
