Torrent Power to set up 1,600 MW thermal power plant in Madhya Pradesh

Power Generation  -  Sep 01,2025  -

Torrent Power Ltd is set to invest in a 1,600 MW thermal power plant in Madhya Pradesh, marking one of the largest private-sector investments in conventional energy in the state.

According to officials, the project will be developed in two phases of 800 MW each and is expected to supply power to both industrial and residential consumers.

Torrent Power, which currently operates around 4,100 MW of generation capacity across thermal, gas, and renewables, sees the plant as part of its strategy to maintain a balanced energy portfolio.
The Madhya Pradesh government has welcomed the project, citing it as crucial for ensuring reliable baseload power as the state expands renewable generation. “Thermal power continues to be necessary for meeting peak demand and ensuring round-the-clock supply. Torrent’s investment will also generate significant employment during construction and operations,” a senior state official said.

The plant is expected to require coal linkages and water allocations, which the government is working to facilitate.
