Steady progress for huge power plant expansion in Yamunanagar

Power Generation  -  Jun 11,2025  -

The 1x800 MW Ultra Super Critical Expansion Unit at the Chaudhary Chhotu Ram Thermal Power Plant (DCRTPP) in Yamunanagar is moving forward as planned. The goal is to have it ready by March 2029.

This project, costing Rs 7,272.07 crore, was given to Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) to handle everything from design to construction. Sanjeev Kaushal, who chairs the Haryana Power Generation Corporation (HPGCL), led a high-level meeting to review its progress.

Some important construction steps include finishing the curtain wall by June 2025 and the main structure by July 15, 2025. A big operational step, getting the boiler ready for its first light-up, is planned for August 2028. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for this expansion on April 14, 2025, officially kicking off the project.

Getting the necessary land is still happening, with 56 acres identified and 35 acres already secured for the site's initial setup. BHEL has also gotten a temporary 19 kW electricity connection and has asked for a larger 250 kW line to help with further construction.
