Second phase waste-to-energy plant at Jawaharnagar to begin in August

Power Generation  -  Jun 18,2025  -

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has told the National Green Tribunal (southern zone) that the second part of the Jawaharnagar waste-to-energy (WtE) plant is expected to start working in the first week of August 2025. This phase will produce 24 megawatts of electricity.

GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan confirmed in a sworn statement that a power purchase agreement (PPA) was signed on May 12 between Hyderabad MSW Energy Solutions and Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana (TGSPDCL).

This PPA is currently waiting for approval from the Telangana Electricity Regulatory Commission (TGERC). The boilers department has given the go-ahead after successful water pressure tests, and steam tests are planned for mid-July, which will clear the way for the plant to fully start up.

The TGERC will set the electricity price under Section 62 of the Electricity Act, 2003, which will include things like the tipping fee (cost to dispose of waste). Any government benefits or incentives must be passed on to the electricity distribution company.

No charges for transmitting or moving power will be added by TGTransco, and power can only be taken from the main electricity grid during shutdowns (this is limited to 11% for the plant's own use).
