Rs. 438 crore modernisation push approved for New Mangalore Port

Infrastructure  -  Mar 31,2026  -

The Centre has approved a Rs. 438 crore redevelopment plan for New Mangalore Port, aimed at upgrading cargo handling infrastructure and improving operational efficiency. The project will focus on modernising berths, mechanisation systems, and logistics support facilities to handle higher volumes.

As a key port on India’s west coast handling petroleum products, fertilisers, and bulk cargo, the upgrade is expected to enhance turnaround times and throughput capacity. The redevelopment also aligns with broader efforts to strengthen port-led development and reduce logistics costs under national infrastructure initiatives.

The project is expected to introduce improved cargo handling technologies, reducing manual intervention and increasing efficiency. This will help the port compete with other major ports on the western seaboard.

Enhanced capacity and faster turnaround will also benefit exporters and importers by lowering dwell time and logistics costs. The redevelopment is likely to support increased trade volumes in the region.
