Rs. 1,196 crore Fotu La tunnel to secure all-weather connectivity on Ladakh’s NH-1

Infrastructure  -  Mar 31,2026  -

The government has sanctioned a Rs. 1,196 crore tunnel project at Fotu La on NH-1 in Ladakh, targeting one of the most weather-sensitive stretches along the Srinagar–Leh corridor. The high-altitude pass, frequently affected by heavy snowfall and extreme conditions, has long disrupted civilian movement and defence logistics.

Once completed, the tunnel will provide uninterrupted connectivity, significantly reducing travel time and ensuring year-round access to forward areas. The project is also strategically important for military supply chains, given NH-1’s role as a lifeline to Ladakh. Execution will be taken up under national highway development programmes with focus on engineering resilience in extreme terrain.

The tunnel is expected to incorporate advanced construction techniques suited for high-altitude conditions, including ventilation systems and avalanche protection measures. Such infrastructure is critical in ensuring operational reliability throughout the year.

In addition to strategic benefits, the project is likely to improve tourism access to Ladakh by reducing seasonal travel disruptions. This could further boost economic activity in the region, particularly in hospitality and local services.
