Prime Minister lays foundation stone for major power project in Tamil Nadu

Power Generation  -  Jul 30,2025  -

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for an important new power transmission system in Tamil Nadu.

This project, costing about Rs 550 crore, is being built by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) to carry clean energy from the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant.

The new system will help bring 2,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity from the plant's Units 3 and 4 to various states and union territories, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Puducherry.

This will help meet the increasing demand for power in these regions. The project includes building a large 400 kV transmission line from the Kudankulam plant to Tuticorin-II power station.

This development is a big step towards India's goal of getting 500 gigawatts (GW) of energy from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030, helping the country move towards a cleaner and more secure energy future.
