PM Modi to inaugurate renovated Thoothukudi airport

Infrastructure  -  Jul 22,2025  -

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the newly renovated and expanded Thoothukudi airport on Saturday, July 26, 2025.

The airport has undergone a significant upgrade project, reportedly costing over Rs 350 crore.

A state-of-the-art terminal building has been constructed, covering an area of 17,341 square meters (or 17,500 sq m) with 4 entry gates. It is designed to handle 1,440 passengers during peak hours and 20 lakh (2 million) passengers annually.

The new building will feature modern facilities, including 21 check-in counters, 7 baggage scanners, and 3 aerobridges. It's also expected to be a four-star GRIHA rated energy-efficient building.

The runway has been extended to 3,115 meters (from 1,350 meters) and widened from 30m to 45m, making it capable of handling Code-4C aircraft, such as the Airbus A321, which can operate both domestic and potentially international flights.

This expansion is expected to significantly boost air connectivity for the southern districts of Tamil Nadu, promoting trade, tourism, and investment in the region. The state BJP unit is reportedly planning a grand welcome for the Prime Minister during his visit.
