PM Modi inaugurates world's first bamboo-based bioethanol plant at Numaligarh

Petroleum  -  Sep 15,2025  -

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated a bioethanol plant and laid the foundation for a new polypropylene unit at the Numaligarh Refinery in Assam.

The bioethanol plant, with a cost of Rs 5,000 crore, is the world's first to use bamboo as a feedstock, positioning India as a leader in second-generation biofuels.

This project is a key component of India's National Biofuel Policy, which aims to reduce the country's dependence on imported crude oil.

The plant is expected to benefit local farmers and tribal communities in Assam by creating a new market for bamboo.

Simultaneously, the foundation for a Rs 7,230 crore polypropylene unit was laid. This unit will boost the production of a crucial polymer used in a wide range of products, from textiles to automotive components.

The two projects, representing a total investment of over Rs 12,000 crore, are set to accelerate industrial growth in Assam, strengthen the "Make in India" initiative, and create new opportunities for the region's youth.
