MPCB approves Rs 229 crore jetty project near Gateway of India

Infrastructure  -  Jun 05,2025  -

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has given its nod for the Rs 229 crore passenger jetty and terminal project near the Gateway of India in Mumbai.

The MPCB communicated its decision in a letter to the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB).
Ports Minister Nitesh Rane confirmed the state government’s commitment, stating, "The government is taking firm and definitive steps towards the completion of the project."
Despite official backing, the project has faced stiff opposition from Colaba residents, who raised concerns about potential damage to the heritage precinct and worsening traffic congestion.

While the Bombay High Court refused to issue an interim stay, the Supreme Court on May 27 also declined to intervene, citing the matter’s scheduled hearing in the High Court on June 16.

Designed to alleviate boat traffic at the Gateway, the jetty will accommodate 20 boats and is slated for completion in 30 months. It aims to decongest the area and modernise marine passenger facilities.
