Meghalaya’s Tura bypass gets Rs 951 crore Central sanction to boost connectivity

Infrastructure  -  Jun 16,2025  -

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has approved Rs 951.27 crore for building a new 29.03 km Tura Bypass in the West Garo Hills of Meghalaya. This project aims to reduce traffic in the district headquarters of Tura and make urban roads safer.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced on social media that the bypass will connect NH-127B to NH-217 and will be a two-lane road with paved shoulders.

The official statement said, “NH-217 (formerly NH-51) is the main road linking Guwahati to Dalu, which is located at the international border with Bangladesh and serves as an inland customs check-post.” The Minister added, “The bypass will start near Sanchonggre village on NH-127B and end at Jenggitchakgre village on NH-217. It’s designed to go around the current path of NH-217, which passes through the busy and crowded urban center of Tura town, where narrow roads and heavy traffic make it hard to move around.”

The notification also stated, “This new road will not only ease traffic in Tura but also improve road safety by separating local traffic from through-traffic.”
