MCL to invest Rs 64,900 crore in energy and chemical ventures

Power Generation  -  Jul 01,2025  -

Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), a major subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL), has announced a substantial investment plan of Rs 64,900 crore to diversify its operations into thermal power, renewable energy, and coal-to-chemical projects.

This strategic move aligns with India's broader energy transition goals and MCL's commitment to creating new revenue streams beyond traditional coal mining.

The largest share of the investment, Rs 40,000 crore, will be directed towards setting up a 4,000 MW thermal power plant. This project will be developed in partnership with Coal India Limited and the Energy Department of Odisha.

MCL has outlined three significant projects in the renewable energy segment, totaling an investment of Rs 17,900 crore.

This will involve an investment of Rs 12,000 crore. MCL has already installed 52 MW of ground-mounted and 2.5 MW of rooftop solar capacity.
