Maharashtra signs Rs 8,000 crore MoU for 1,500 MW pumped storage hydroelectric project

Power Generation  -  Nov 04,2025  -

The Maharashtra government has signed an MoU worth Rs 8,000 crore to develop a 1,500 MW pumped storage hydroelectric project, reinforcing the state’s commitment to clean and reliable energy infrastructure.

The project, designed to store excess renewable energy and supply it during peak demand, will be developed through a public-private partnership model.

Pumped storage hydropower, which uses reversible turbines to store and release electricity, has become crucial for balancing renewable-heavy grids.

Maharashtra’s initiative aligns with India’s national energy strategy to ensure grid stability as the country rapidly expands its solar and wind power capacity.

The project is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities during both the construction and operational phases. With the state’s electricity demand growing due to industrialization and urban expansion, the new facility will serve as a major backbone for energy reliability.
