Mahanadi Coalfields to launch operations in two mines in Talcher

Mining  -  Jun 30,2025  -

Mahanadi Coalfields (MCL) will commence operations at two new coal mines—Subhadra and Balabhadra, in Talcher coalfield in Odisha by FY30.

The Subhadra mine, with a reserve of 25 million tonne (MT), is expected to be operational by FY26, while the Balabhadra mine, holding 10 MT of coal, will commence operations by FY 2029-30.

These additions will enhance MCL’s presence in Angul district, where it already operates seven of its 18 mines across Odisha. To maintain transparency and efficiency, MCL has installed CCTVs in 98 percent of its active zones and is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and GPS to monitor coal transport in real time.

The company also reaffirmed its commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by FY30. In FY25, MCL produced 225 MT of coal, marking a nine percent increase from the previous year. Its coal dispatch stood at 210 MT, a six percent growth. With an estimated reserve of 35 MT, MCL assures there will be no shortage of coal for power generation in the near future.
