Mahagenco to establish 1,071 MW solar power projects in Maharashtra

Power Generation  -  Jun 25,2025  -

Maharashtra State Power Generation Company (MAHAGENCO) is planning to build solar power projects that will produce a total of 1,071 MW of electricity. This effort aims to reduce the state's reliance on traditional energy sources and ensure that farmers in Maharashtra receive continuous electricity during the day for irrigation. More than three lakh (300,000) farmers are expected to benefit from this.

MAHAGENCO, which is India's second-largest government-owned power producer after NTPC, is leading the "Solar Agriculture Feeder Scheme 2.0". This scheme is a major program by the Maharashtra government that aims to help farmers financially while also lowering the cost of electricity services.

Under "Mission 2025," the government plans to provide solar power to 30 percent of agricultural feeders (power lines that supply farms) by the end of 2025. Solar projects ranging from 0.5 MW to 25 MW will be built within 5 to 10 kilometers of electricity distribution points that serve farms. A special joint committee will be set up to manage the project. Additionally, MAHAGENCO and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet will create a central system to keep track of land acquisition and how the projects are being built.
