L&T to invest Rs 1,000 crore in Katupalli Shipbuilding Complex

Infrastructure  -  Jul 17,2025  -

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) is set to make a substantial investment of Rs 1,000 crore in its integrated shipbuilding complex at Katupalli, near Chennai.

This significant capital infusion aims to unlock the facility's full production potential, which has been operating below its approved capacities despite earlier environmental clearances.

The Katupalli complex, located approximately 40 km north of Chennai, is a crucial asset for L&T, boasting a greenfield shipyard and a dedicated design center for warships.

In 2009, the facility received Environment Clearance and Coastal Regulation Zone clearance, permitting an annual production of 50,000 tonnes for its modular fabrication facility (MFF), along with the construction of 25 new ships and 60 ship repairs.

However, with its existing infrastructure, L&T has been unable to consistently meet these ambitious targets. Currently, the shipyard undertakes about 15 new ship constructions and 30 ship repairs annually.

The planned Rs 1,000 crore investment is earmarked for further development works within the existing 892.11-acre area to bridge this gap.
