KMC plans to establish biological waste treatment plant at Patharghata

Manufacturing  -  Jul 16,2025  -

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is actively considering a significant step towards enhancing the city's waste management infrastructure with a proposal to establish a 500 Tonnes Per Day (TPD) integrated biological waste treatment plant at Patharghata.

The proposal, estimated to cost Rs 177 crore, was placed before the Mayor-in-Council (MIC) on June 23, 2025, and is slated for consideration at the KMC's monthly meeting.

This ambitious project aims to implement a Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) plant at Patharghata. The scope of work for the chosen contractor will include the design, engineering, financing, construction, procurement, supply, installation, and maintenance of the MBT facility.

The primary objective is to fortify Kolkata's municipal solid waste management system through advanced processing and disposal infrastructure, significantly reducing the burden on existing landfills, particularly the overstretched Dhapa site.

Mayor Firhad Hakim has been a strong proponent of modernizing Kolkata's waste management.

He recently inaugurated a state-of-the-art waste processing complex at the Dhapa landfill site, which includes a 100-TPD material recovery facility, a 10-TPD plastic waste processing plant, and a 1-TPD thermocol processing unit.
