JNCASR to establish India’s first CO2-to-methanol plant in Telangana

Research and Development  -  Nov 28,2023  -

In keeping with the nation's environmental objectives and pledge to cut carbon emissions, the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) in Bengaluru is constructing the nation's first carbon dioxide (CO2) to methanol plant at a Telangana power plant.

After four years of work, Prof. Sebastian C. Peter of JNCASR faculty reported that his team's first scientific breakthrough—converting CO2 into methanol—was accomplished around 2020–21.

Peter then incubated a startup — Breathe Applied Sciences — at JNCASR to demonstrate the technology’s economic viability.
