India's first green hydrogen and methanol bunkering facilities launched at VOC Port

Chemicals  -  Sep 15,2025  -

India has launched its first port-based Green Hydrogen Pilot Project at V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port.

This Rs 3.87 crore pilot facility is a key component of India's "National Green Hydrogen Mission," which aims to make the country a global hub for the production and export of green hydrogen.

The project will produce green hydrogen to power internal port operations, including streetlights and EV charging stations.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also laid the foundation for a pilot Green Methanol Bunkering and Refueling Facility.

The Rs 35.34 crore project, a collaboration between the VOC Port Authority and SOPAN Group, will facilitate a reduction of up to 95% in carbon emissions for ships.

This initiative is expected to position VOC Port as a critical green bunkering hub, aligning with the country's Net Zero by 2070 commitment and showcasing a viable path for the maritime industry's energy transition.
