Hindustan Zinc's Board approves India's first zinc tailings reprocessing plant

Power Generation  -  Aug 19,2025  -

Hindustan Zinc has announced a significant step towards sustainable growth with the approval for India's first-ever Zinc Tailings Reprocessing Plant.

The Board has sanctioned an investment of Rs 3,823 crore for the facility, which will be established at the Rampura Agucha Mine in Rajasthan.

The plant, with a capacity of 10 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), is designed to extract residual metals like zinc and silver from what was previously considered waste.

Tailings are the finely ground remnants left after the initial mineral extraction process. By reprocessing this material, the company is converting waste into valuable resources, promoting resource efficiency and contributing to the circular economy. The project is expected to be completed within 28 months.

This initiative is a core part of Hindustan Zinc's strategy to double its production capacity and reinforces its leadership in sustainable mining practices.

The move aligns with India's projected doubling of zinc demand over the next five to ten years, driven by infrastructure and steel sector growth.

The company's CEO, Arun Misra, highlighted that the plant will allow for the responsible reprocessing and storage of historical waste, aligning with high environmental standards and the company's broader sustainability commitments.
