Hindustan Zinc has announced plans to build North India’s first phosphate fertiliser plant in Chittoor, signalling backward integration into fertiliser production and reduced reliance on external phosphate supplies. 

The facility will produce phosphoric acid and derivative products tailored to regional agricultural needs and is expected to leverage the company’s captive raw material sources. 

Officials say the project will strengthen food-crop support ecosystems and enhance fertiliser security in the northern states. 

This strategic move aligns with broader national priorities to bolster domestic fertiliser manufacturing and reduce import dependence. 

The plant is seen as boosting local employment and agro-industry linkages.
