Durgapur Projects set for revival with new 660 MW unit

Power Generation  -  Oct 23,2025  -

The Durgapur Projects Limited (DPL), a state-owned power utility in West Bengal, is undergoing a major revival plan with the establishment of a new 660 MW thermal power unit.

The state government has announced an investment of around Rs 800 crore for the project, with nearly half of the funds already utilized for preparatory work.

The upcoming unit, designated as Unit No. 9, will add substantial capacity to DPL’s existing generation portfolio and is expected to address the region’s growing power demand.

The project will be developed on unused land within the existing DPL complex, and the government is exploring a public-private partnership model to ensure efficient execution.

This expansion marks a significant step in revitalizing one of West Bengal’s oldest power plants and is expected to generate new employment opportunities while strengthening the state’s energy security.
