Cochin Shipyard’s proposed steel-block plant to boost shipbuilding output

Infrastructure  -  Oct 24,2025  -

Cochin Shipyard Ltd is advancing plans for a major steel block fabrication facility aimed at increasing shipbuilding throughput and reducing lead times.

The proposed project — comprising phased development with an estimated multi-thousand-crore outlay — would enable pre-fabrication of large, pre-outfitted steel blocks that can be transported to shipyards for assembly.

First-phase work is expected to be completed within two years following approvals, and the facility is intended to supply the shipyard’s new drydock and support India’s broader naval and commercial shipbuilding ambitions.

Industry analysts say the plant would significantly shorten construction cycles, lower costs through economies of scale and make Indian yards more competitive for large hull projects.

Key next steps include land allocation, environmental clearances and forging vendor partnerships for outfitting and logistics.
