Chennai Port to revive Rs 8,000 crore outer harbour project

Infrastructure  -  Nov 03,2025  -

Chennai Port Authority has revived its ambitious Rs 8,000 crore Outer Harbour project, originally conceived over a decade ago, to expand capacity and transform the port into a major transshipment hub on India’s east coast.

The project will involve constructing new deep-draft berths, breakwaters, and container handling terminals designed to accommodate next-generation vessels.

The Outer Harbour development is expected to boost cargo handling capacity beyond 200 million tonnes annually and reduce congestion at existing terminals.

Its revival aligns with India’s Maritime Vision 2047, which seeks to modernize port infrastructure and enhance coastal connectivity to support the country’s growing trade volumes.

The project’s execution will also catalyze allied industries, logistics, and ship-repair facilities in Tamil Nadu’s coastal belt.
