The central government has granted stage-I in-principle approval for a Rs 1,734.70 crore ropeway and rapid transport system in Shimla under the Forest (Conservation) Act, allowing the diversion of 6.1909 hectares of forest land. 

The 13.79 km project is designed to connect key points across the city, ease traffic congestion, reduce carbon emissions, and promote sustainable mobility for residents and tourists.

State officials say the project will generate employment, enhance travel experience, and align with the “Green Himachal” vision. 

Construction is expected to begin in April 2026, and the ropeway will feature multiple stations and eco-friendly elements such as solar-powered cabins and frequent service intervals.
