Centre approves 1,350 MW upper Sileru Hydropower project in Andhra Pradesh

Power Generation  -  Nov 11,2025  -

The Centre has cleared the Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation’s (APGENCO) 1,350 MW Upper Sileru hydropower project, marking a major milestone in the state’s renewable-energy development. The project, located in Alluri Sitarama Raju district, will be one of India’s largest hydropower plants.

The facility aims to boost grid stability and provide round-the-clock renewable power for Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring regions. It will also enhance water management and create employment during its construction phase.

The project supports the state’s goal of increasing its clean-energy share and complements ongoing solar and wind additions. Once completed, Upper Sileru will replace ageing hydro units and add significant peak-load balancing capacity.

With construction scheduled over five years, APGENCO expects the project to attract substantial investment and strengthen its portfolio of renewable and conventional assets.
