BMC kicks off mega Thane water tunnel project

Infrastructure  -  Jul 07,2025  -

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has commenced work on a massive 21-kilometer water conveyance tunnel project linking Yewai and Kasheli in Thane to Mulund in the eastern suburbs.

This ambitious undertaking, estimated to cost approximately Rs 4,500 crore, is set to be a cornerstone of the city's robust water infrastructure for decades to come.

The project is designed to enhance Mumbai's existing water supply system and address the growing demands of its ever-expanding population.

The new tunnel will serve as a primary conduit for fresh water, while the existing network of pipelines will be retained as a crucial backup, ensuring greater reliability and resilience in water distribution.

Work orders for both phases were issued in late 2024, with construction expected to begin shortly thereafter. The entire project is anticipated to take six to seven years for completion.

The BMC currently supplies approximately 3,900 million liters of water daily from lakes located in Thane and Nashik districts.

This new tunnel network will play a crucial role in securing and enhancing this supply, especially to the eastern suburbs of Mumbai.
