Biogas plant for waste-to-energy conversion to be established in Bhubaneshwar

Power Generation  -  Jun 03,2025  -

A biogas-based captive power plant will be established at the Unit-I vegetable market in Bhubaneshwar as part of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) sustainable waste management initiatives.

The plant will scientifically process organic waste into green energy, marking a major step in eco-friendly waste disposal.According to BMC Deputy Commissioner for sanitation N Ganesh Babu, the Unit-I haat currently generates around 16 to 17 tonnes of organic waste daily. A pilot biogas plant with an initial capacity of three tonne per day (TPD) will be developed on a 3,500 sq. ft. area within the market’s micro composting centre (MCC) complex.

“The generated biogas in the plant will be converted into electric power and transferred to the public grid,” he said. “If found feasible, the capacity will be expanded further.”

Bids have been already invited to select an agency for the plant’s installation and its maintenance for five years.
