Big hydro projects get green light in Arunachal Pradesh's sensitive Dibang Valley

Power Generation  -  Jun 11,2025  -

The Forest Advisory Committee (FAC) has given its initial approval for the Etalin Hydropower Project (3097 MW). This project will be built on the Dri and Talo rivers in Arunachal Pradesh’s Dibang Valley, an area known for its rich and important natural environment.

The FAC is a government body under the Union environment ministry, and it looks after areas that are vital because of their biological, ecological, social, or cultural value.

In addition, the FAC has also given its preliminary approval for the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd’s plan to use 313.88 hectares of unclassed forest land for the Tato-II Hydro Electric Project (700 MW) on the Siyom river. However, a decision on using 261.53 hectares of unclassed forest for the Attunli Hydro Electric Project (680 MW) on the Talo river in Anini has been put off for a later time.

It's worth noting that "unclassed" or "deemed" forests are protected under a Supreme Court decision from 1996. The Tato II project is in the Shi Yomi district, while the Etalin and Attunli projects are both in the Dibang Valley.
