Bengaluru awaits Rs 2,000 crore Government approval for five new STPs

Infrastructure  -  Jul 21,2025  -

The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has submitted a proposal to the state government seeking approval for the construction of five new Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) at an estimated cost of Rs 2,000 crore.

These crucial additions are designed to collectively boost the city's wastewater treatment capacity by 385 million litres per day (MLD).

The proposed expansion is vital for Bengaluru's environmental sustainability and aims to formalize treatment processes across the sprawling urban landscape.

The BWSSB currently operates 34 STPs with a combined capacity of 1,345 MLD, managing an extensive network of over 11,894 km of underground drainage.

To bridge the existing treatment gap, the board has 20 STPs already under construction with a capacity of 470 MLD, a project costing Rs 1,382 crore.

Additionally, tenders have been floated for nine more STPs with a total capacity of 140 MLD, supported by World Bank assistance. If approved, the five newly proposed plants will significantly raise the city's total treatment capacity to 2,343 MLD.
