Assam Government finds land for Rs 40,000 crore power project

Power Generation  -  Jun 24,2025  -

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that a 3,000-megawatt (MW) thermal power project, costing Rs 40,000 crore, will be built in the state.

Two land areas have been found in the Dhubri and Goalpara districts for this project. The foundation stone is expected to be laid by November.

Initially, Kokrajhar was considered for the project to bring major investment, but the state government decided against it after some groups criticized that it was an attempt to "take away tribal land." The project is expected to create 100,000 direct and indirect jobs.

This project fits with Assam's goals for industrial growth and marks an important step in improving its infrastructure.

The Chief Minister explained that the government first suggested Kokrajhar to receive a project similar in scale to the Rs 26,000-crore Tata chip-making unit coming up in Jagiroad. However, objections from some groups led to a change in plans.
