Adani Power's $3 billion project in Bihar reflects national energy push

Power Generation  -  Sep 15,2025  -

Adani Power has signed a 25-year power supply agreement with the Government of Bihar for a new 2,400 MW thermal power plant.

Located in the Pirpainti area of Bhagalpur district, the project is a significant undertaking, with an estimated investment of about $3 billion.

The facility, which will be the country's largest privately funded coal project in a decade, will operate under a Design, Build, Own, and Operate (DBOO) model.

The plant's output of 2,274 MW will be supplied to Bihar's state-run distribution companies, promising to enhance the state's power supply and improve energy access and reliability.

The project is part of Adani Power's strategic goal to achieve a base load power generation of 30.7 GW by 2030. This investment also mirrors a broader federal push in India to increase coal-fired capacity to meet rising energy demands, with plans to add a further 80 GW of thermal capacity by 2031-32.
