Work begins on 150 MLD sewage-treatment plant in Bhilai

Manufacturing  -  Dec 01,2025  -

The Bhilai Municipal Corporation has started work on a 150 MLD sewage-treatment plant, a key project aimed at cleaning two major waterways and improving overall urban water quality. The Rs. 145 crore initiative, supported by long-term O&M commitments, is targeted for completion within 24 months. Once online, the facility will significantly reduce untreated waste disposal and support non-potable reuse across industrial and horticulture applications.

The project is part of a broader upgrade to Bhilai’s civic infrastructure, complementing earlier initiatives in drainage, sewerage, and river pollution control. By diverting major drains into a modern STP, the city aims to cut down contamination levels and comply with national water-quality norms. Improved water treatment will also support urban expansion and ensure better environmental outcomes for surrounding communities.

Additionally, the STP will create a reliable stream of recycled water that industries can tap into, reducing pressure on freshwater resources. This aligns with sustainability mandates for steel and industrial clusters in the region. The project is expected to generate employment during construction and provide a long-term boost to Bhilai’s environmental resilience.
